Go Dairy Free – Review & Giveaway
I thought this book review and giveaway would be a great wrap up to my mini series on eating dairy free. If you missed the previous posts, you can read them here:
How to Go Dairy Free
How to Go Dairy Free Part 2: Substitutes
How to Go Dairy Free Part 3: Adapting Recipes
What I have written, however, is only a brief introduction by someone who has not been dairy free for long.
If you are serious about going dairy free, or are seriously thinking about it, Go Dairy Free by Alisa Fleming is the book to buy. What I love about Go Dairy Free is that it is full of information. Everything I wanted to know about eating dairy free is in this book. All the questions I have asked about the dairy free diet are answered in this book. But that’s not all. The book is also packed with all types of recipes.
I need to be clear with my readers. This is not a gluten-free book. It does not discuss the gluten-free diet and the recipes are not all gluten free. Many are naturally gluten free, but others (especially the breads and sweet stuff) are not. Have no fear! One of the great features of this book is a Recipe Food Allergy Index at the back. Each recipe with page number is listed and a chart indicates if it is vegan, egg free, soy free, gluten free, wheat free, nut free, and/or peanut free. The recipes in this index are listed by category so it is easy to look up the ones you are interested in.
Since I’m comfortable with adapting recipes, the recipes in this book that caught my attention were for things like making your own spread (who knew homemade coconut butter was so easy?), cheese alternatives, and substitutes for various forms of milk.
Except for the front and back cover, the book does not contain any photos. It’s all black and white, which I don’t mind, but the print is on the small side (I know, you hear that a lot from me). I think it is well worth the list price of $19.95, but right now it’s only $13.41 at Amazonand is eligible for free super saver shipping.
To find out more about the book, visit the Go Dairy Free website. You can view the Table of Contents, which gives you a very good idea of all the information presented in the book, and the Recipe Index which includes some photo links.

I recently went dairy-free about 2 months ago. It has been a great experience. I am oftentime searching the internet for dairy-free recipes, but oftentime wish I had a real recipe book. I am cheap like that! How sweet it would be to open my cupboard to this book. :) randomcash05@gmail.com
My 3yo son is dairy free - a book like this would be such a valuable resource and make things so much easier. Thanks for the giveaway! sonyablair at gmail dot com
Don't enter me in the giveaway, Linda. I bought a copy at BlogHer Food and had Alisa sign it for me. I just loved getting a chance to hang out with her in San Francisco and I think your readers will find that hanging out with us gluten-free types has her incorporating more GF recipes on her alisacooks.com blog.
Would love to have a copy of this book. We are dairy free, and also gluten free in an attempt to manage allergies, gluten intolerance, and Crohn's Disease. We enjoy "adjusting" recipes to eliminate dairy, gluten, processed sugar, etc. Thanks for the opportunity to enter this Giveaway.
My toddler was recently diagnosed with a dairy allergy. This would be so helpful!

I am thinking about going dairy free for my entire family. i don't drink milk it does'nt agree with me. but my son drinks it like he is a calf. i am concerned, i am hearing things that are not good about our milk supply. i need to find substitutes for him to use instead of cows milk. Thanks, for the giveaway it would be very helpful.
Not entering the giveaway, Linda, but wanted to say this is a great review of Alisa's book. It's very comprehensive and a terrific resource as you say. I first found out about Alisa a few years back and she did a presentation for my support group (her first one!) via telephone. She was so knowledgeable on the topic; I learned so much. Then I was really fortunate to meet her at BlogHer Food in San Francisco and now happily call her a friend. :-) I've had no problem either adapting her gluten-full recipes to gluten free. Good luck to your readers and I've very much enjoyed your series, Linda!

I am interested in this book because my youngest child is allergic to dairy. We've gotten pretty good at substituting, but I always wonder if I could be doing more, and we need variety!
I have to go back to being dairy free. I was dairy free when I was nursing my 6th child because of her problems, but she died at 3 months old so I went off that diet.
I'd love to win this book. Just today I must have mistakenly eaten something with dairy (we were on the road) and now I am suffering for it!

I am interested in the book because we were told to go dairy free for our kids by a doc. It has been hard to cut it out and I am looking for any help I can get. I also have been going dairy free and would love more ideas for me. I subscribe via email and on facebook. Love your info, recipes and posts. Thanks. dragonbratfly@gmail.com
Both of my kiddos are dairy free and I am too when I am nursing. I would love this book! I use the website religiously.
Being lactose intolerant, I have no choice but to go dairy free - but I love being dairy free! I would love this book to enhance my dairy free diet choices.

My 3yo is severely allergic to gluten, dairy, and egg. It would be so useful to have a cookbook like this one to be able to have more options for cooking.

Hi Linda,
Don't enter me in the giveaway either. I just wanted to say I wish I was more caught up and knew you were doing this series. Sam and I have been cutting the daiy out of our diet (I am reading Alisa's book and Sam is reading the Inflamation Diet book.) We think it is necessary for us since we had some gelato yesterday after being dairy free for just a few days and immediately regretted it. Not pretty.
Alisa's book is great and so informative. And, of course, Alisa herself is also pretty great. Didn't even know about her before BlogHer Food, and I also am happy to now call her friend.
Anyway, going back to catch up on your posts.
xoxo,
Tia

I would love to have everything I need to know about living dairy free at my fingertips. With myself and one of my sons being lactose intolerant, this book would help!
I found out that dairy gives me migraines, but I'm really struggling to find delicious recipes. Alisa Fleming was one of the first people to inspire me to start making changes in my diet and I would be forever grateful to have a copy of her book!
I was recently diagnosed with gluten intolerance and was told that dairy plays a role with it as well. Since being diagnosed, I have begun cutting/limiting my dairy intake but would love to know more. I feel this book would be a great resource for me and provide great insight as my search to finally feel like myself again continues.
Also, I notice posts from you via, Gluten Free Mom on Facebook but will "like" you as well. :)

My Dad just went dairy- and soy-free and I'm trying to eliminate both from my and my daughter's diet. My biggest problem is that she is a picky eater in the first place and she loves cheese! I think this book would help me find some alternatives. kjkennedy712@hotmail.com
We've been dairy free for one month now, so we're newbies! I'd love to have a resource that would open my eyes to the recipes and other options out there. Thanks for doing the giveaway!

I'm an event planner with food allergies who started my own company last year to educate the hospitality industry on how to cater to guests who have special dietary needs whether it is a personal preference, a medical condition or a food allergy. This book will be a great reference for me while training chefs, meeting planners and food & beverage directors on the options they have when planning for those who are dairy free.
I just found your blog and love it, so I will be subscribing to it as well as your FB and Twitter accounts.

This book sounds great! I am lactose intolerant so avoiding dairy is something I do all the time. I'd love to win a new book, thanks for the giveaway!
Omg, can't even start to tell you how much I would appreciate this book. My son cannot have dairy so I am always on the lookout for ideas and recipes to help him have a healthy life without feeling deprived. We are happy and healthy and I know this book would only help us in our quest to live our lives as happy as could be!

I am allergic to dairy and so is one of my children....3 of them haven't been tested, so possibly more allergy issues to milk. I need to "Go Dairy Free" literally. I don't eat it often, but I'm not 100% free of it - I believe this book would help me understand the benefits of being free :) Thanks for the post(s) about being dairy free!
I didn't just like you on facebook - I love it! Always glad to connect with more gluten/allergy friends :)
I'm not on twitter - but if i was i would definitely connect :) I have 5 kiddos to keep up with + food issues - 'nough said :)
It's just one of the greatest books I've read for dairy-free cooking. I make a cheese sauce from it that my 3-year-old just loves. Thanks for the giveaway!
My son has eczema and it's linked to dairy products. I'm always looking for new recipes to try that the whole family will enjoy instead of making 2 different meals. The book sounds like a great resource!
I've been dairy (and egg and peanut free) since I found out that my then 8.5 month old has these allergies. Since I am still nursing, I have taken them on as well. I have been following Go Dairy Free's website and would love to have the book as well.
I'm really interested in this book because I am dairy-free and would love to read the section about dairy-free substitutes.
I'm just figuring out I can't have dairy and I used to love it - I'd love this to learn substitutions in cooking and baking.

I'm very interested especially in the Guide to Dairy Substitutes and the Calcium Chapter. It's nice to have the important basics all in one place. Thank you!
I have almost always been lactose intolerant, my 4yr old daughter is dairy free due to severe allergies and for her safety, so is my 2yr old. We have been living a dairy-free life for almost 4 years now.
My boyfriend still eats dairy at home and I'd love to help him switch it out...this book would be great for that. Fingers crossed! :)
I'm interested in this book because a long time ago I was diagnosed with a dairy intolerance. I went off dairy for a while, then started eating it again when I was a teenager and now I'm on the fence as to whether it bothers me and/or if I should remove it from my diet. It would be interesting to read about how others recommend getting off of it!
I was diagnosed with a milk allergy last year, but I haven't ventured far into finding or making substitutes yet. I'd love some guidance with a book like this.
Thanks for offering the review and giveaway!

I just liked you on FB per a friend who recommended you. I'm allergic to dairy and more of my family is discovering the same of themselves. Although I should be dairy free, I'm not. I nee to. I'm also wanting to go GF. Thanks for all your info!
I checked out the go dairy free website and like the list of dairy substitutions. My son is lactose intolerant, so learning about good substitutions would be very helpful. My sister is also lactose intolerant, so I'd be able to share great recipes for her if I won this book (or bought it)!
i have been gf for over a year and will soon be tested for casein intolerance as well. this seems like it would be a good resource to start with, if necessary.
i already "like" you on fb (Laura Gray Myers). :)

I'd love to check this book out. Always looking for more great DF recipes. I would also appreciate the other allergen guide included.
We went dairy free a month ago for my son. We knew he had a hard time with dairy, but wanted to see what he could tolerate. Well, after a very small challenge of GFCF brownies with a couple of natural candies on top that had milk powder in them, we found out his tolerance is zero. I'm always looking for new resources since we are both GFCF and he has multiple other food allergies.
