Gluten-Free Cookbook Review & Giveaway
One of my favorite gluten-free cookbook authors is Carol Fenster. I own several of her cookbooks and a few of my very favorite recipes come from those books, or were adapted from one of her recipes. That’s why I jumped at the opportunity to review her newest cookbook,100 Best Gluten-Free Recipes.
The Book
With the exception of five new ones, the recipes in this book are taken from her book 1,000 Gluten-Free Recipes. The cookbook title says it all. These are 100 of her best recipes and it is put into a compact affordable book with 30 beautiful color photos. It’s a very nicely done color cookbook with the ingredients listed in red. It also features icons next to recipes that are vegetarian, kids favorites, and quick to make.
Another feature I really like in a cookbook is variations on a recipe. Many recipes in this book have a highlighted box at the end with a variation of the recipe. The front of this cookbook has useful gluten-free information, Carol’s sorghum flour blend, and a description of gluten-free flours. A couple of special features are a list of gluten-free, dairy-free brands for specific ingredients, and a list of menus that combine some of the recipes in the book to make a themed meal such as Elegant Dinner Party, Southwestern, or Weekend Brunch.
My Experience
Before doing this review I made a couple of the recipes that I hadn’t made before. The first was soft pretzels. They are something I miss at times, especially when I’m walking past an Auntie Anne’s Pretzel shop. I have to admit, that I was disappointed in the result as a pretzel. I did, however, think they make a good bread stick. They just didn’t taste like pretzels to me. I even tried brushing butter on top.
The second recipe I tried was Fresh Chive Flatbread with Dipping Oil. I goofed a little by adding all of the olive oil to the dough, rather than saving 1 Tablespoon for sprinkling on top. The dough ended up very thin and wet, and the bread was definitely flat and rather heavy. Next time I will use the right amount of olive oil and hold back a little of the liquid. It tasted good though, especially with fresh rosemary in the bread and chives on top. I served it with the dipping oil as a side at dinner and everyone liked it.

I follow you on FB and I've never tried any of Carol's recipes. I feed my sweet hubby who is now gluten-free.
I've tried a few of her recipes. I have the 1000 recipe version. It's sooo huge! It's amazing just as a regular cookbook as well with naturally gluten free recipes and things we don't think about like common steak, bbq, adobo sauces or spice mixes etc.
I have tried some of her muffin recipes (banana, etc.) when I borrowed the 1,000 recipes book from the library. I'd love to own one of her books!
I have not tried one of her recipes. My niece has celiac and is learning to cook - this book would be great for her!
Thanks for hosting a giveaway!

I have not tried any of Carol's recipes but I love the section for breakfast, breads and muffin. I would try those first.

Carol's pizza crust is amazing. I look forward to trying more of her recipes. I'm a little lazy about using all the different flours though, and often substitute my basic GF mix (Bette Hagman's featherlite mix). Thanks for the review.

I haven't tried any of her recipes. This is the first I've heard about her book. But now that I have 3, possibly 4 or 5 in my family with Celiac, I'm always looking for new recipes.
I follow you on twitter( my username is punkykittie) and retweeted, subscribe via email, and like you on FB and left a comment on the FB post. I would love to try this book. I've been GF for about a year now and Im always looking for good recipes :)
I would love to win this cookbook for my GF 5 year old. I haven't tried any of Carol Fenster's recipes, but it's time for my little girl to have some wonderful foods made just for her. She's always having to leave the good stuff out.
I like you on Facebook. I haven't tried her recipes but if I'm not lucky enough to win your drawing, I will definitely check out her books.
Around 6 or 7 years ago I borrowed a friend's copy of Carol Fenster's book to try some of her recipes. The ones I tried were mostly breads, which were okay, but I soon began cutting back on my carbs, so I lost track of those recipes. I have her book on my "must buy next" list!

Thanks, Linda, for so many good ideas that I've gotten from having subscribed to your blog. You're inspiring! :=)
I have never tried any of Carol's recipes but did met her last year at the Denver CSA Vendor Fair, and again at a Denver CSA Meeting. She is a great gal, very down to earth and humble. Thanks for running the contest!

i haven't found many gf cookbooks containing recipes my family and i really like so i'd sure love to give this one a try. i get tired of cooking the same tried and true meals. :)
I have not tried any of her recipes, but I have a three year old who just started going gf in May. I love to cook and try new recipes, and I would love to try them. This would be an amazing gift for our whole family!!
Count me in on this give-away! I'm always looking for new (and proven) gf recipes. I didn't know about this author before this post.
No, I hadn't tried any of the recipes, but I'm anxious to give them a go! Two of my sons have autism, and they do much better without gluten. No allergies present. The problem? I'm cooking for six, and the rest of us are fine with it. Some of us (especially hub) prefer the normal stuff. We can't afford to make two meals timewise, energywise, or financially. I'd love to find more recipes that may please everyone while benefitting my two sons!
I love Carol's recipes, and keep a supply of her sorghum mix on hand at all times. She's got some great cookie recioes, and I'm a huge fan of the sun-dried tomato and kalamata focaccia. Soooo good! This book sounds awesome!

I have never tried any of Carol's recipes but now I'm reading PP's kalamata focaccia comment and I must try it!!!
I already subscribe to your blog and I love it. I appreciate all of your knowledge as I am sort of new and so I'm learning.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
Never used her cookbook before, but love experimenting with new recipes for my two gf kids. I'd love to try some recipes
Having just found out a couple of months ago of a my gluten allergy, it's been a challenge to find alternatives to the gluten filled breads and pastas I loved so much. I have yet to find gluten free ones that are indistinguishable from their gluten laden counterparts. But I keep trying.
I have not tried any of Carol Fenster's recipes, I hear they are very good.

I have not tried any of Carol's recipes, but if that picture of the flat bread isn't even as good as it is supposed to be, I want to try that one. I just about want to eat my computer looking at it.
