Create a Gluten-Free Quiche Challenge

Monthly Challenge
While quiche is known as a French dish, it actually originated in Germany in the medieval kingdom of Lothringen, which was later given the name Lorraine by the French.  According to Wikipedia:

“In French cuisine, a quiche is a baked dish that is based on a custard made from eggs and milk or cream in a pastry crust.”

Quiches are traditionally a breakfast food, but can be enjoyed at any meal.  They are also generally well liked, as long as you eat eggs.  Most quiches include cheese, but they don’t have to.  I think a dairy free quiche could be successfully made, but I’ve never tried.

The crust is the part of a quiche that is a challenge for gluten-free cooks.  I have overcome that obstacle quite easily by making crustless quiches.  However, that’s not the only option.  Below I list some crust ideas.

I’m not going to give you a recipe because they are easy to find but the basic parts/ingredients include:
Let’s consider some options for two of those parts.

Crust – I used to make a quiche with a shredded potato crust.  I have to try it again soon.  The rice and polenta I haven’t tried, but it seems they would work.
Additions – Here are ideas for commonly used additions, but get creative and use what you like.
The Challenge:  Create a gluten-free quiche this month, post your recipe, and then link to it here on May 5th for Gluten-Free Wednesdays.  You might make a simple crustless quiche or try something very unusual.  It’s up to you.

Great challenge for the month! There are so many great ways to flavor a quiche, and TONS of great crust ideas. I often make them crustless because I am lazy, but I have made them w/ GF pie crust, quinoa, and even one from baking parmesan cheese! The possibilities are endless :)

Now that is something that I miss being Gluten Free. Quiche. I am going to have to try making my own using some of your tips. You can count me as a new subscriber even before the blog party gets started tomorrow.

I am having a giveaway over on my blog for Gluten Free Cookies that are amazing! If you would like to enter. http://twolittlecavaliers.blogspot.com/2010/04/short-and-sweets-gluten-free-human.html

I'm all over this! I was planning to make quiche for dinner tonight--so timely! Great challenge. :) (And if you like beets, come join my SOS Kitchen Challenge, too!)

I can't wait to try a quiche! I used to love them before going GF and haven't had one since then. This'll definitely be a fun challenge! (Although for me, emphasis on challenge :))

I have not made one in years. Since I worked in a kitchen. We have egg allergies here...I might have to come up with an egg-less quiche...will have to do some research..

Live Laugh and Enjoy!

I love quiche! I've been trying to stay away from cheese though, so this will definitely be a challenge for me since I've only made quiches with cheese before. Hmm...

Thanks for the idea. A friend posted a link to your gluten-free crust challenge. I came up with a Broccolini Quiche with a Potato-Rosemary crust. Here's the link to the recipe: http://missjolieannkitchengarden.blogspot.com/2010/04/broccolini-quiche-with-potato-rosemary.html

Quiche is a fantastic idea. I love quiche.

I can't find a place to link up this week. I have exciting news about one of our GF bloggers to share.

Where did the link go?

Chaya ~ You have to go to my Gluten-Free Wednesday post to link up. Right now it's the first one on my home page.

Quiche is one of my favorite things to make. I have a simple GF crust recipe that I use and it always turns out great. Such a versatile dish, too. I'm glad to have found your blog, and hope you don't mind if I add you to our Blogroll!
