Once a Month Cooking Giveaway

cookbookcover This giveaway is now closed.

The other week I received the new Once a Month Cooking Family Favorites cookbook.  I first heard about the idea of once a month cooking years ago.  It always interested me, but I was never willing to bite the bullet and do that one big cooking day.  After reading this cookbook, I’m convinced I should give it a try.
Let me explain what once a month cooking actually means.  It’s about having dinner meals planned, prepared (usually partially), and frozen.  Obviously, some cooking has to take place later because we don’t eat frozen food.  Some foods don’t freeze well such as pasta or rice, so those parts of the meal are cooked the day they are to be eaten.  The main dish, however, is cooked and ready to be reheated, or prepared and assembled, ready to be cooked.

This cookbook provides a number of different menu plans including a two-week gluten-free cycle.  For each cycle you are provided with a menu chart  that shows you at a glance what meals you have frozen, how many people each recipe feeds, ingredients that are needed at serving time, the type of meat used and the cooking method.  There is also a column for “serve with” notes.

Next, you are given a pantry list that includes things you probably have on hand, such as herbs and spices, butter and eggs, and freezing supplies.  Any items you don’t have should be added to the shopping list, which is also provided.

Instructions for assembly are given which take you step by step through food preparation (chopping, browning meat, etc.) to preparing and freezing the individual recipes.

I didn’t have as much time as I had expected to try the recipes, but I did try a few.  Aside from the gluten-free cycle,  I found that many of the recipes can be easily made gluten free by substituting one or two ingredients, and some are naturally gluten free.

I thought the gluten free cycle had too many chicken recipes (7 out of 14), but like I said, there are lots of other options in this book.  The lists and instructions are done by cycles, but with a little extra planning you could create you own cycle, or omit a few recipes that don’t appeal or can’t be made gluten free.  I know I’d be happy with 25 frozen meals.

The recipes I tried turned out very well and everyone liked them.  The first two were not part of the gluten-free cycle, but the roast chicken was.  I did not freeze the dinners, but used the cookbook like any other cookbook.  The recipes were easy to make and delicious.
vegetable & meatball soup
The first one I tried was Vegetable Soup with Meatballs.  I want to mention that I found frozen turkey meatballs at Aldi’s grocery store.  It was the Fit & Active brand they carry.  The meatballs weren’t the best, but they weren’t bad either.  If you can’t find gluten free meatballs, you will have to make them from scratch.

southwestern egg casserole

The second recipe I tried was the Southwestern Egg Casserole.  It is a meatless dish, but contained plenty of dairy.  It had lots of flavor and was very filling.  The next time I make it, though, I will cut the amount of butter in half.

roast chicken

Lastly, I tried the Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Thyme Chicken.  It turned out flavorful and moist.  It’s not unusual for me to roast a chicken with olive oil and herbs, but I particularly liked the addition of Parmesan cheese to this recipe.

I have an extra copy of Once a Month Cooking Family Favorites to give away.  If you would like to enter the giveaway, leave a comment on this post telling me if you’ve tried once a month cooking or not.  The giveaway is open to residents of the 48 contiguous United States.  It will end on Friday, October 9 at 11:00 p.m. eastern time.

You can visit the Once a Month Cooking website for tips and a free one-week cooking cycle. If you would like to purchase the book, or take a look inside, you can do so at Amazon.

That sounds great! I've been doing once a week cooking, but I've never gone so far as to attempt once a month cooking.

Wow, another great giveaway!

As my husband gets paid once-a-month am always on the lookout to helping me cut down on temptation to go the stores more than that. Once a month cooking would help and if the gluten free recipes are suitable for my niece and nephew, they could join us more often. This cookbook would be a wonderful addition to any homemaker's recipe collection!

I have not yet tried once-a-month cooking, but am SO interested! And the recipes in this cookbook look delish!

My sister (also a celiac) has this book and swears by the concept! She has passed some of the tips on to me, and I use some of the ideas when I help clients make practical meal plans.

I have been waiting to borrow a copy of this book from my local library. I'm down to #121 waiting! I would love a copy of my very own as I'm anxious to give it a try!

I do cook for the freezer occasionally, but never have tried freezing for the whole month at one time. Please enter me in your giveaway.

I would love to try once a month cooking! I usually d the once a week cooking like most of the other posts. My only concern is not having enough freezer space. We are moving to a house in April and I will buy a deep freezer then. By the way, thanks for your blog, I love it!

I haven't tried once a month cooking yet, but I'd love to try it!

i do it when I am due with a baby...one months worth of food to put in the freezer for after he/she arrives. My hubby always wants me to do it more often so I have more time, I just never have enough meals that will freeze well for variation. This would be great!!

I've thought about doing this but haven't had the time to research it. Thanks for the info.

I do a version of once-a month cooking...I will cook several times throughout the month but make a months worth of several dishes. This way there is variety, the work fits my schedule and I don't run out of eats all at the same time! Would love a copy of this!!

I've always wanted to try one-a month cooking but I have never known where to begin. This would be a great chance for me to start!

I would love to have your Once a Month cooking book. Sounds like an idea I need to try!

Years ago I ordered a once-a-month cookbook (forget who wrote it)
But, I never tried it. It always seemed like a lot of money to spend at one time. So I never tried it. Although it still intrigues me. I think it would be nice to know all I have to do is take it out of the freezer and heat it up. Seems like a lot less time in the kitchen.

I forgot to leave my e-mail.

No I have never cooked once-a-month.I am intrigued by it.

I've heard about once a month cooking but never actually tried it. Very good idea! Thank you!

I have tried cooking 5 and 10 meals at a time but I have never cooked for an entire month. It would be so helpful to have ready made meals to feed my four small but hungry children!

I have never done a full month's worth of meals at once, but I do bulk cook. I usually do 10 - 15 meals and snacks per month for the freezer. i am always looking for new recipes!

Hi Linda: I am embarrassed to say that until I read your post I had not heard of the Once a Month cookbook.
I am always looking for new and gluten free recipes, and this seems to have exactly what I want. I cook always every night now since being diagnosed with Celiac so having recipes that I know are gluten free is half the battle! I appreciate all the hard work you put into your sites. They help me more than you will ever know.

I have a friend that this would be the PERFECT gift for - she is very much into freezer meals.

I have tried freezer cooking methods. However, I have never tried to do 30 days at once. I really like the fact that some of the recipes are glutten free. One of my sons needs to stay away from wheat. Thank you for the giveaway.

I've done a lot of extra cooking for the freezer over the years. This spring, I helped my sister get ready for her new baby by filling her freezer with many meals, snacks and breakfast items. But I have never done a whole once-a-month cooking day. I'd like to try it! I have one of their other books and love the recipes I've tried. Yummy!

I've never done the once a month (or even once a week) cooking plan, but I really want to try it! I even have this book on my amazon wish list!

I'm more of a freezer cooking sort of girl, but that's because I don't have enough recipes that I like well enough to repeat. Would love to check out the book! Thanks for the chance!
